In Awe of The Woods

Post by Gladelord Berenthor »

Greetings,

I'm new to Wood Elves and just about to start up my army.
Found this forum so thought I would come and say hello.

I spent a lot of years in Bretonnia, but have always stood in awe of the forest.
Have only just now wandered (trying to shut out the age of sigmar!) and am amazed at the models!

Looking forward to starting my army!
Was just wandering if there was a few units that people consider staples for their army before I start deciding what to paint?

Bretonians and Wood Elves have always been staunch allies against Chaos. Welcome to the woods!

At the moment, because of age of sigmar, no one really knows what units will turn out to be the new staple! Is there a particular theme you had in mind? In the new ruled, elves buff Elves and tree folk buff tree folk but they can work together as well.

I think you can't go wrong with a box of glade guard to start with. Get your colour theme together and see what else you like.

Let us know how you progress. Did you think about combining your wood Elves and Bretonians under the order alliance for old times same?

Glade guard are good! Warhawk riders are great! lord on stag and wild riders, way watchers were awesome in 8th, and good in aos. Chariots might now also be an option!

Thanks for the kind words!
I actually should've mentioned I was planning on sticking with the 8th edition rules, rather than head into Age of Sigmar.
I think I might head AoS eventually, but for now the group has decided to stick with 8th.

I imagine the same sorts of units within 8th would work well? I'm heading towards a shooting phase style army, maybe with a bit of ambush harassment!
Apologise for being the young elf in all of this, but found it best to approach and see what are the standards in people's lists before making some purchases.

We were all young elves once, no need to apologize at all.

It's all well and good to focus on one phase or another, but you should be aim to have something constructive to do in all phases. Some shooting, some good combat, some magic, lots of movement, some ambushing, some scouting, etc.

yeah you need opponents to play so going alone into AoS won't work.

In 8th you can't really go wrong with
- Glade guard core
- Wild Riders
- waywatchers
- scouts
other stuff can be good too but is more situational or a bit harder to use( and harder to use doesn't even mean they are neccesarily better when mastered).
I myself like warhawks a lot though, mobile, shooty and can hit and take a hit when needed (charging archers is a thing they do well if the enemy is too shooty).

Thank you to everyone for the help.

I think I might get the following to start off.

1 x Mounted Glade Captain.
1 x Spellweaver
3 x Glade Guards Boxes (48 models)
3 x Wild Riders Boxes (15 models)
1 x Sister Of The Thorn
9 x Waywatchers
12 x Dryads.

Hoping that should get me started on a reasonably well balanced list. At least enough to find out what everything does.
Just got the 8th edition book today (GW still has them all just have to get a stockist to order them in, can't get them from the site).

Loving the models.......having a feeling I will end up with all of them, but at least it's a start!

A solid start, but I would try to add an Eagle (maybe at the expense of the 3rd box of WR).

I'd change 1 box of Wildriders into having a 2nd rank of Sisters, the extra to cast can help, and having a mage in there is a bonus as well!

Yes that is an excellent start, are you thinking about treemen and tree kin? Kin are quite soild and being MI the 2nd rank also get their full attacks

Haha!

I actually started with WE and have just recently begun my Bret army, haven't done much since AoS started its destructive approach. I have a Mousillion army in the making, mixing Black Knights with KotR and zombies with men@arms.

Heh.

You're not the only one not posting much. I had a real problem motivating painting and modeling till ninth age came. Gone to that with full hearth but they don't have lore of undeath which is a little bummer but I kept the theme of Mousillion. You can see pictures of it here:

How are things going for you? Playing or painting any wood elves?
