hpm - Blog completed. Final army shot.
Hey guys,
In an attempt to finish my wood elf army, I am going to post some pictures on here with the aim of improving my motivation to paint.
I'm not much of a painter (hence the required motivation), but I like to think I am good at conversions and green stuff, at least to an intermediate level.
I'm currently working on an Eternal guard list with a unicorn mage and a few other bits. I have some of it painted and when I get time ill start posting pictures. Hopefully Christmas will allow me to finish the army and get it playable.
So firstly, here's my converted treeman:
Its mostly made from the freeman kit but there are a few dryads bits here and there. The right hand is made from dryad parts and a couple of extra branches were added from the back-parts of the dryads (just some spares I had).
I didnt really like the look of the new treeman so I was going for a middle ground between the old (5th ed) treeman where his face was in the middle of the body and the new one's detail. I think I succeeded, however I wish I had posed the legs a bit more dynamically. I wasn't thinking about the overall model when I started constructing it from the bottom up.
Sorry about the image quality.

Re: Attempt at an army blog - converted treeman
I think it looks great! Great use of green stuff and I think that right hand is pretty cool. Not sure I can make out a face in the picture. Do you have any better shots? Looking forward to seeing it painted.
I'm a lot like you. I do a lot of conversions, but don't seem to find the time to paint. I used to paint more when I had a dedicated place to paint. Kids seemed to have changed that. However, I can do a conversion relatively easy without having to break out water, brushes and paint etc.
I just got that new Games Workshop paint station in an attempt to get me painting more often. So far it looks pretty good on the shelf. LOL
Keep up the great work and postings!

I really like your thoyghts about mixing the two editions for your treeman. I also wouldnt worry too much about the leg positioning either, i mean it is a giant tree

Looks great! I'll also be doing some converting if I ever get a new treeman, but not quite to this extent. I look forward to see this one painted as well.

Re: Attempt at an army blog - converted treeman
Here's a close up of the face.
I might do a bit more green stuff round the eyebrows when it comes to it. However my colour scheme uses a lot of turquoise (looks better than it sounds) and I am planning on doing turquoise-light-eyes to make them stand out a bit more.
Right now I am trying to paint some converted warhawks. Once they are done I will post the pictures. Then I have to finish the final unit in my warriors army....THEN I will get to paint the treeman.

Re: hpm Blog - Alternative Warhawk Riders(update)
Here are my (almost finished - need to base my whole army) warhawk riders and Eagle BSB (front right).
My philosophy when it comes to which models I want is that if I don't like the GW figure, I will make my own. Nor do I buy finecast, period. I don't really like the GW warhawk models so I converted some of my own. The "surfer" look is okay for me, its the only 'sensible' way I can figure they would be able to ride them. Draping their legs round its neck seems a bit front-heavy and kneeling - I don't know if they could fight/shoot so well.
http://i1314.photobucket.com/albums/t57 ... 18xodb.jpg
They are made primarily from Dark Eldar Hellions which I think give a perfect pose and a few other Wood elf spares with a bit of green stuff. The Eagles are the hobbit eagles (expensive but they look great and they are plastic) Here's some close ups:

WHR #3 Champ?

I didn't want the eagles looking so uniform so I flipped the wings upside down on this one. Looks fine and just needed a bit of green stuff. Feathers aren't too difficult.

Looking through these photos actually highlights my bad painting skills. I like how the poses turned out though. I think I will be going over these guys again to make them look a bit better.
My next task is to paint up the treeman and the rest of my EG. Hopefully ill get a few bits for Christmas to build my waywatchers and wardancers (they will all be plastic!).

I was considering using the hellions for a similar purpose. I like how you painted them like hawks. You see a lot of hawks painted like eagles. You might want to try a flat coat sealant/protectant. That will even out the paint and the wash. It's the glare from the wash gloss that's making it look off, not your painting skills. Keep up the great work!

That sounds like a good idea. Could you recommend any products? Do GW do any? I seem to remember them doing a sealant of some kind before my hiatus from the hobby.
I should also note that I green stuffed in the eyes of the eagles to make them more hawk-like. The little beady ones don't really fit for eagles let alone hawks, who have a smaller eye to head ratio

Didn't notice that, but yes, that definitely is an improvement!
I always use GW flat coat, but I'm sure the one army painter sells is good too. Testers flat coat is also pretty good, but if memory serves me, will yellow whites over time.

Here's some pictures of my (almost finished) Eternal Guard. Need to do the bases for these (and my whole army). Will probably increase the unit size to 30 total.
The banner is from the Dragon Princes, the crossbar from the Glade Guard kit and the spear tip from the IoB Griffon Noble + bit of Green stuff.

Finished painting the treeman. Tried to get a "bark" colour rather than a generic "brown".

Hey, looks great. Really like your treeman, a lot
Only advice is keeping the sides of the bases black or dark brown. The green distracts from your models which you don't want ;P

I am yet to base my army and I was thinking about re doing the edges. What colour would you recommend apart from Green? I was thinking "scorched brown" (still using the old paints).WilcoH wrote:Hey, looks great. Really like your treeman, a lot

Re: hpm Blog - Treeman painted
The scorched Brown you suggest is quite similar tot stirland mud in terms of colour.

Re: hpm Blog - Treeman painted
As always, I like to try and convert models which I don't like. These are my waywatchers and waystalker. The waywatchers are a bit of a kitbash. Any guesses which model the waystalker is from? I think its quite a nice conversion personally.
The leaves are just glued on beech seeds. I actually bought them but you cab get them from trees

I'm not sure what to do with the bases yet. I think I might wait and see if we go to round bases before I base them.

Very cool! Love how dynamic they are and the leaves were a great touch. The round base comment hurts my soul.
