[Competition] A Graphic Designer! - Update!

Post by Naggie »

Greetings, my fluffy minions!

I am in the need of a graphic designer. You do not be awesome, you do not need to be skilled in every aspect of creating images. However, I do need someone who can help me, and rather quickly.

Some time ago, I somehow was assigned with the task of creating the new frontpage of this year's songbook for our welcome when the new students reach us at KTH (my university). I was reminded of this task yesterday, and it had completely slipped my mind. I have until the end of June to get something done. And since I suck at all types of graphic design (so I have no idea how this was assigned to me  ) I am on the look-out for someone who can help a guy in trouble here.

Last year, we had a theme of Space SciFi series (think Hitchhiker's Guide, Futurama, Dr. Who, Firefly, Star Trek etc) and this is how that frontpage looked :
front-cover.jpg
This year, the theme is "Detectives & mysteries" (think Sherlock Holmes, Cluedo, Basil Mouse etc).
As you can see from last year's cover, the standard isn't high. I want to get something better this year, but I feel unable to create it myself. Do you think you have what it takes to create such an image in about two weeks? Let me know!

----------------------------------

COMPETITION!

Rules:
- The image must be coherent with the "Detectives & mysteries" theme as described above
- The image need not include any text. That can be applied afterwards, just make room for it or add "Mottagningen 2009"
- The final cover will be printed on an A5 booklet, so make an image of a decent size
- The emblem on last year's rocket should be included if possible
- I need the image before June 26th!

Prize:
The winner of the competition will get a title and possibly a rank image.

Here are the entires sent to me so far.

I'll volunteer. Though I'm kinda busy at the moment so I probably won't be able to start drawing before the next week.

A few questions Naggie.

Whats the format? A4 or something else?

That little heraldic shield on the rocket? Should it be included?

What will the title be?

Then I should be able to whip something up for you :)

Ditto. Boards on Friday. Thus the relative quiet on all fronts (including the treelady). If Tuhis is up to it I'll let him knock it dead though, as I think my next week or so may be rather busy as well.

Personally I vote you make it a contest, and the winner gets a custom title "Nag's Doodler" or something equally goofy.

The other very important questions are: What is the desired resolution of the image (300 ppi is pretty standard and looks good printed) and what is the limit on colors if this is going to get printed?

Oh, and what size is it supposed to be? That's a good one to know.

The size (in its printed version) is A5, so half a regular A4. But the bigger the image is, the higher quality it gets later on when it shrinks down to proper size.

That is the emblem of our faculty. I have heard no demands that it must be there, but I don't think anyone would be angry if it is ;)
What will the title be?
You can skip all text if you want. I can add on something afterwards. But if you feel like incorporating some text in the image, it should say "Mottagning 2009".

Darn good idea. I'll edit the first post.

Ooooooooo I do so lust for a title. I may have to make sure I get around to this next week (as I have an extremelly impatient roommate bothering me about another project and my Windows 7 beta trial ends very soon and will shut down after all of 2 hours).

So how do you like this? Get me some decent resolution version of the shield, and I'll work it in there :)

Hmm.. Think I'll make an avatar out of it

TVF: It looks awesome, but a tad too ... morbid to use for happy and jovial student parties. Less "killing", more "investigating" :)

And yes, it should be red and black. No colour changes if you use this :)

Grumble! Goddang. Good-for-nuttin' happy go lucky students... No respect no more... Phoo-eey! <.<

Okay... Perhaps you're right, it probably got a bit too dark – but it makes a great avatar :p

It does indeed! I like it lots  .

I would try my hand at something, but you all'd just laugh me out of the (figurative) room...

And then you could take pride in having the rare ability of making people laugh

Are you looking for something in a film noir style? 'The third man' Kind of stuff, fog, trenchcoats and the like?

What is the actual purpose for this? Is it going on the front of a welcome leaflet? If that's the case then surely the uni will have given you some extra boxes to check (that are often lame and constraining).

Looks like a case of the blindingly obvious again... :smirk:

Cheers mist. Naggy, I'm gonna do a bit o research but I got an idea in mind. Just to confirm theres no censorship on things like ciggarettes or stuff liek that (some places can be a bit funny about stuff like that).

No pornography, no nudes, no nazistic or rasistic implications or insinuations. And preferably something that is fun. We love to have fun and make jokes. On the inside you can find some "good advice" to our party members, such as

"If you suddenly find yourself under a table, hug a leg and wait until help arrives."
or
"The myth goes: Women dance because it's fun, men dance because they want to mate, and transsexuals dance because mating is fun. This is not true. Others can also mate fun."
or this picture:
Untitled.jpg
"If you panic around an accident, you are not allowed to leave. Even if you hum the theme from Titanic."

So, yeah... Think fun and full of humour :)

IMPORTANT UPDATE!

The end date for this competition has been moved to Friday June 26th!

Also, after checking with my boss, the CL-logo should be included if possible.
And it's spelled "Mottagningen 2009"

*sighs*

Phew. Just in time. From tomorrow on I won't have any access to computers or scanners for two whole weeks, so the only way to get here is my ipod. If you notice anything that needs to be fixed in this pic, tell me now or else I cannot fix it.
