The Fury of Athel Loren (Picture Intensive)
Hey everyone,
Here is my Forest Spirit army as it stands at the moment. The list itself is currently a WiP as I cannot decide whether to field Drycha or not. Otherwise, everything is pictured here except for her and a couple of Branchwraiths.
Army list (help is greatly appreciated!):
http://asrai.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=14280
The Entire Force
Treeman Ancient
Treeman
Wild Rider Noble & Wild Riders
2nd Unit of Wild Riders with Warbanner
Treekin
And last but not least, the Dryads!
Here is a link to the photobucket album:
http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/W ... 20Spirits/
For those curious, my painting method is as such:
Prime white
Paint leaves Goblin Green, some Shining Gold was added to the armor of the Wild Riders
Dip in Minwax Polyshades (Bombay Mahogany)
Paint base Bestial Brown & flock
Matte Varnish!
Thanks in advance.

The colors really bring the army together. How long did it take you to paint everything?

Re: The Fury of Athel Loren (Picture Intensive)
This army was fully assembled and painted in about a month exactly. For example, it takes me roughly an hour to get the green on a unit of 8 Dryads and about 15 minutes to dip (gotta drag all the equipment out and whatnot ).

Here is the ever alluring Drycha:

Wow, a month.. this great army in only a month... respect mate! One question, I've seen this technique dipping now quite a lot, but I don't really understand. Is it just like taking a mini and then put it in the paint jar? I doubt it... please explain the technique and teach us .
Seriously though, awesome, really a united force, it looks great!

As i understand it, dipping is where you paint the base coats onto the model and then dip the model into a special solution which act similarly to a wash. It goes into the crack and crevices and darkens that area making it look like the model has been shaded.
I'll admit i was skeptical of the procedure but these models look pretty good. The problem with dipping is that its obviously very inflexible but for something like a dryad i imagine its perfect.

Farodin, you can use whichever wash/ink-type solution you want.
For my part, I would recommend Army Painter. They do a number of different tones and it's specifically designed for dipping. The website has a gallery so you can view examples of the effects each of the different tones has.

YOu can also get the same effect using wood stains from a hardware store. A light walnut is a good color to start with as it looks good with just about everything.

Re: The Fury of Athel Loren (Picture Intensive)
Sorry. Haven't checked this board in a while.
Yes, what they said. I use Bombay Mahogany (Minwax Polyshades).
I simply paint whatever green / gold I need and give them a dip, shake them off, and let dry. After they're dry I paint the bases / flock them.
Lastly, it is absolutely imperative to varnish the models.

They look nice together.
There's too much brown for my liking but otherwise they look good I especially like that spellsinger. He's great

They did actually come out a bit darker than I intended. However, I'm very pleased with the end result. Now I just have to finish my Lizardmen.

Re: The Fury of Athel Loren (Picture Intensive)
I like the brownish look they have. I can see that the dipping technique described above really works wonders with this particular palette. I think it's effective in giving them that earthen quality, they look like they really are made of wood. Adding some bush-flock or gravel to the bases would be a good addition.

Re: The Fury of Athel Loren (Picture Intensive)
They look great together! Just the bases.. they could use some extra work, couldn't they?
But apart from that, great job!

Re: The Fury of Athel Loren (Picture Intensive)
Really like the look of the army as a whole. Have you used the same technique for the elves and tree models? if you have, do you paint the greens/gubbins/flesh (if any) on before dipping?
Getting my asrai together and it will include a higher % of elves so was wandering if this is a good technique

Re: The Fury of Athel Loren (Picture Intensive)
All the models are painted with the same technique. Goblin Green is applied before dipping.
Sometime next week, I intend to post pictures of my Highborn on Dragon, Warhawk Riders, and Great Eagle.

Re: The Fury of Athel Loren (Picture Intensive)
So am i right in thinking I can use any kind of wood varnish found in a hardware shop?
Re: The Fury of Athel Loren (Picture Intensive)
I use Minwax Polyshades. I have no idea if other wood stains work.
