Tournie Report (3 Games) Stag Rider Build, lots pics

Post by Ender Shadowkin »

Ok here is a battle report for the Sidh Court (project loge here: http://battleglade.freeforums.org/ender ... -t338.html)
It was a local Tournament a half hour from my house. I don’t really know too many of the players though as I don’t play games at the store, though I’ve played a few ion tournaments over the years. 22 people there, with 5 or 6 daemon lists. Those magical attacks are a real drag vs our forest spirits . . .. .

My List 2250 pts
Lord Stag - Aillen Greenspear HoD, AoN, Spear of Twighlgiht, Wild Rider Kindred
Mage Unicorn – Tuatha the Unfading Scroll X2,Glamour Weave Kindred.
BSB: Llyr Harbinger of The Fey – SoCM, Word of Might (with Eternal Guards)
Noble with GW: Oisson the ageless, Amber Pendant, Gwnryths Horn (with Eternal Guards)

Core:
Grey Sisters - 8 Dryads
Fey Handmaids - 8 Dryads
Crimson Guard – 10 Glade Guard
Harvest Sentinels – 10 Glade Guard
Eternal Maidens – 18 Eternal Guard, Full Command, Warbanner
Special
Blazing Hearts of the Wild Hunt – 5 Wild Riders, Full Command
Ironpine Spirits – 3 Treekin + Eldar (I almost always take the Eldar, the Extra attack and challenge opportunites always seam to pay off)

Rare
Ghillie Hazelheart – Treeman
Sylph Highbreeze - Eagle

3 Casting Dice (1 Bound)
3 Dispel Dice (2 Scrolls) (but MR from the Wild Riders and Unicorn (usually in Treekin)

GAME 1
The first game was against Josh wielding a brutal Daemon Horde. As I stared at all of those magical flaming attacks, I thought . . .oh crap . . ..this could be a real problem . . .
This is what I recall of his list.
Blood thirster
Tzencth Hearld in Chariot
28 Blue Horrors + Changling
8 Blue Horrors
8 Blue Horrors
6 Furies
7 Flesh hounds
4 Screamers
6 Flamers
6 Flamers
Wow Flamers really suck, As we deployed I was checking off in my head what I needed to do to win the game, to start I needed to eliminate the flamers and the screamers. At the end of the game he had two flamers left after multiple GG volleys, strangle roots, and a HoD volley. . . . and did I win?

This was a tough scenario. Each side got to deploy only 2 infantry units. Then in your turn you needed to roll a 5 or 6 for each unit to move them on . .. I did not roll well. Also, this was not considered a meeting engagement so no free woods for me..

His flamers demolished me, wiping out the both glade guard units, most of the dryads, eagle, and eventually the wild riders . . . grrrr

Here in Turn two he has a whole S..load of units (including the blood thirster), while my guys apparently wander around off the board, at last my caddy came on

"Um guys, could use a little help here"
Image

I shot and then strangle rooted the furies.

Image

His screamers moved out flame the glade guard, and I surprised him by sending my Glamour weave mage after them. You must respect the Horn! The unicorn rider polished them off in two turns of combat. Huzahh!
Image

The blood thirsty landed right in my deployment zone, and Mr. Hazleheart (treeman) bravely opted to count flowers in the nearest woods. He emerged to polish off the flamers. Which unfortunately took him away from the rest of the battle.
I moved my treekin and Eternal Maidens on to support each other, with the general and BSB. I Felt they could take out the daemons with a little luck and some bad instability tests.
<a href="http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/En ... G_6108.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/En ... G_6108.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Meanwhile my Wild Riders (Hearbreakers) charged the Flamers, stand and shoot WTF . . . 2 WR down. Then in combat he made all of his ward saves, and did 3 unsaved wounds, killing me to a man (err woman). ??? I was a little stuned at that. I figure I should have been able to run down some skirmishers . . . moving on.

Image

I forced him into a situation where his flesh hounds charged into the Treekin plus lord 7 unsaved wounds later . . .(one on the lord) I passed my break test. Next turn the dryads came in but the blood thirstrer positioned as well as the Chariot.
Everything Piled in, and was going quite badly. My lord was locked into a challeng with the blood thirster (who thought his re-rolls would get through the annoyance.) I kept putting wounds onto the Blood thirster only to have them save. The treekin and the dryad wracked up some kills and I won the combat (allowed me to flip around facing the thirster). I Eventually the EG got into the blood thirsters flanks and while my lord went down. I forced a bunch of instability tests causing the flesh hounds and the chariot to go poof. The Bloodletter kept sticking around . . . ha did make 5 Ward Saves and passed 4 instability tests on the Blood Thirster, so I definitely had a shot at winning. The Stone of the Crystal Mere worked phenomenally for the BSB.

Image

It all ended in a draw (to his advantage).
This was a great game, with a fun lively opponent. I was quite happy with the draw, I did miss my objective points, I needed to Kill the opposing General (yeah right), keep my general alive (oops), Capture more banners (he only had 1 . . .), control More Hills, over run at least one unit (tricky vs Daemons). So it was a pretty bad scoring game for me.

GAME 2
Next I played Mike, Who I had run into this same time same tournament last year. He had nice small but mobile empire list, a little too light on shooting to be super competitive IMHO.
He Had
Arch Lector + War Altar (of course)
Mounted Warrior Priest
Mounted BSB
Mounted Fire lvl2 Mage, Rod of power, (scroll?)
5 knights
5 White Wolves
10 Inner Circle Knights
21 Flagelants
5 Pistoliers
5 Outriders (champion, grenade Laucner_)
1 Great Cannon (really just 1?)
DOW Giant

This scenario was Fog of war and involved rolling artillery dice for the first couple turns to see your visibility (good news, the canon only ever got off one shot)
I went with refused flank and locked off half the battle field with my treeman, my opponent unwisely allowed me to ignore nearly half his force

I tried to pour a lot of fire into the War altar, but this didn’t really work out for me (resulting in 1 wound).

Image

On the far flank I rolled up the high born and riders unloading the HoD into his Pistoleers . .. killing 2 . . . grrr they wheled around and unloaded on the ladies, killing 4. Next turn my dryads demolished the pistoleers
On the right the Dryads got too close to the giant, who yelled and balled then ran them down.
Image

Image

He then over ran into my Treekin who put 2 wounds on him, but I still won combat (love those treekin). Untfortunatly next turn he piled in with the waralter , I put a couple more wounds on the giant but broke (1/2” away from bsb range .. . drat) and was caught.
Image

The War Alter rumbled forward through the glade guard and eventually off the board, but he came back later on to his demise . . .
.
Image
The Stag Lord and the remaining Wild Rider Rolled through the knights (took 2 turns, but Lord wracked up 3 killing blows). These two went on to chase down the cannon (stag did go down fom a cannon ball).
In the middle the giant fled from the treeman ending up in from his other Cav unit. In my turn I moved the EG into position and blew my horn. He only had one wound on his giant, but if I would have shot it, I would have opened my self to a cav charge. The next turn I charged and killed his giant with the EG. I love killing giants.
The remaining unit of glade guard shot up the flagelents, then got charged, there were 4 left after the stand and shoot . . .the archers eventually killed them all.

Turn 4 he moved his arch lector back on the board, trying to run down my archers in tunr 5 (who fled! There is no honor in being a dead elf, which is my mantra). Leaving him open to charges from the EG and Treeman. Directed all attacks on Altar destroyed it, auto broke and overran the lector. Kind of a strange game I had a win in the end, even though I ignored his big cavalry block ,I had a few board quarters and he didn’t get to any of my expensive things.

GAME 3
This game was against an inexperience player. However he did wipe the field clean in his previous battle with his 8 chariot Dragon led HE force . . .

We got a table with a lot of buildings, and finally this was not considered a meeting engagement! Those two things made it very difficult for him from the get go, with lots of places restricted to his chariots. Plus I felt I had a couple good counters to his star dragon . So I was feeling pretty good.

His List
Lord On Star Dragon – Vambraces of Defense, Star Lance
BSB (banner of Ellyrion) in Tyranic Chariot
Lvl 2 Wizard in Chariot , Trickster Pendant (which he got to use dammit), Scroll
2x10 Archers
6 Lion Chariots
3 Eagles

Not too hard to pull this off with the terrain setup, I spent a bit of time giving some pointers, as he had not played a lot and was willing to chat about it. He let me spread him out in the deployment phase and isolate half his force. Then the treeman kept him at bay while I dealt with one flank.

In turn one my Lvl 1 wizard miscast (that is always so annoying) and had to roll twice on the table due to the trickster pendant. Luckily I made my ward save.

Image

Knowing all about eagles I shot them all down by turn 2. Not sure what to do with all the terrain may …opponent tried to plow his two hero mounted chariots into what he could get to . . . the Treekin. One chariot failed its fear test, leaving the BSB to be brutally murdered in a flurry of branches and leaves. Elsewhere on the left he advanced with two Lion Chariots and the star dragon. My eagle and a unit of dryads jammed them up while I positioned the EG and Wild riders.

Image

He tried to get a charge in with the wild riders but was an 1” short (just as I planned moo whoo ha ha). Next turn the Wild riders came in, only to see their leader struck down from strikes first lord in a challenge. I lost combat put passed second break (thank you BSB). In the following turn his lord wiffed on his attacks and I killed him (I think I had a wound on him from shooting ) earlier. The dragon got a couple kills in (thank you FS wardsave). But eventual broke and was run down. So my Valiant Hearbreaker Wild Riders (converved from Daemonettes) who got trounced charging into 3 flamers in game one, redeemed themselves by bagging a star dragon. You go girls!

The rest was mostly mop up. His two lion chariots on the left worked through the eagle and dryads and pursued into the Glade Guard, I counter charged in my turn with the rest of the wild riders and the Eternal Guard, noble plus BSB.

Image

He wiped out the archers with his impact hits but I killed both chariots. It was mop up after that as I moved some units into charge range of his other chariots so he could have a little fun rolling dice (there are no extra points for massacres in this tournie).

So I went one draw and two wins. Overall I placed 6th out of 22, with a 2nd in Painting, tied for first in Sports, and high Marks for Comp. The draw really killed me, the battle points are awarded with a heavy emphasis on objectives (determined before the game, 1 point killing enemy general etc), you get 3 points for a win and -3 to +3 from various objections, I had -3 on my draw, with +2, and +3 on my wins…

I think the list performed really well, the high born was deadly and mobile dieing only once (to a bloodthirster!), I never lost the treeman and the EG only got below Half once. The EG forced 4 instability tests on the bloodthirster, killed a giant, ran down and arch lector, and knocked off two lion chariots. In two months I’ll escalate the list to 2500 points (+5 Wild Riders, and 5 Glade Riders), I might switch to a mage lord though . . .or perhaps some Dancers . . .

Great report. I read through all of it. Well done in your last two games but the thing I'm most surprised about is how you managed to hold those daemons to a draw. Bloodthirsters are really tough for Wood Elves to handle and you managed to almost destroy it!!

Excellent stuff, it is always great to see a player get good sportsmanship marks.
Im going to read the rest of this in a salt mine, while eating salt.

Excellent job. Good pics and the battle report was interesting to read through. Good job on the tactics and the win and of course your painting skills.

Having reasonable opponenets makes that a whole lot easier.

Daemons are a really tough matchup for us. I think that first draw was my most enjoyable game, but I keep going back over the details. The marching order thing was frustraing but an interesting challenge. Mainly I kick myself for putting my lord in a postion to not do the charging.

There were several nurgle heavly lists at the tournament (including the winner), with thier regenerating bunkers and hearlds who force you to strike last. Those would have been pretty challengeing to play.

Thanks, I've got most everything pretty well documented in my army log here:

http://battleglade.freeforums.org/ender ... -t338.html

Some of the posts just have links to other posts (stag, treeman, etc), so if you want to see something specific, and don't wan't to wade through the log just let me know and I will post a direct link here.

I still need to take pictures of the completed Wild Riders (based on Mounted Daemonettes), Eternal Guard (based on HE Maiden Guard), Glade Guard, BSB, and noble (though I have pictures of the unpainted models up for the last two.) . I'll try and get pictures of those up this week.
