Slow Site and Server Loads
I contacted our hosting company about why the site has been remarkably slow the last few days and it often times out when you're trying to open a new view. The support fella I talked to was very kind, but he could find anything wrong with the server or this domain. I shall continue to investigate. I cannot see any increase in data transfer (we're still only about half of the transfer we had in May), so it shouldn't be server loads unless we've been cut a smaller share. As said, I shall continue my hunt for the reason.

Re: Slow Site and Server Loads
I noticed that when you tried to post a reply, he often came on a 'page can not be found'. This, however, only occured when the replies where long. So now I only post short posts!
Well, when you hit the 'refresh' button, it works again. You get the page as if you still have to write the message, but the first one is already posted..
Good luck with 'hunting down the reason'. If you find it, kill it in an ambush with killing blow..on long range!

Now I'm logging out every time i leave instead of just shutting down the window. I hope this helps a little bit.

Re: Slow Site and Server Loads
I haven't really had much problem with slow loading... I had more problem with that when I joined this forum... Oh wait that was in may - might be the reason.

For me (IceWeasel in Linux) the site starts to speed up around 20:00 GMT+1 (+2 in DST). Anyone else noticing this improved speed later at nights?

Re: Slow Site and Server Loads
I was just browsing along when the layout started to play up on me.
I checked it out and found that I couldn't post at all, because there was no post button. The only way I got rid of it was to click Delete all board cookies, after which the board seemed to return to normal. Is this an issue with cookies, or was it due to slow server loading... or something else?

Refresh didn't work until I deleted cookies. I even closed my browser, I think.

Re: Slow Site and Server Loads
When it's really slow to load, I too get odd views. But they always get solved after a refresh (if the refresh managed to load). I think the server stress is so large it fails to load the css files.
I also think the site slow-downs have to do with the daily back-up our host makes of our forum. A complete server space back-up as well as a database back-up would slow down the site each day. Comparing the site visits and posting activity and compare the times to the slow times, they don't match. That's why I believe it is something from our host. I'll see if we can trim things a bit to speed up that back-upping a bit.

Re: Slow Site and Server Loads
Due to this slow server as well as other things about our host, I am now looking for a new web host for our site. Nagi is fed up with this.

Hey again! Thread Revival Time!
As we are now on our new host, how do you feel the speed is? Do you notice and slow periods? For me, I feel it loads very quickly all the time. I am so far very pleased.

Re: Slow Site and Server Loads
The site seems much quicker on the new host, although I'm yet to try anything drastically testing of the server itself...
Generally though, I'm impressed!

Re: Slow Site and Server Loads
I'll hold off until I try it again during times that were quite slow on the old server, but it seems to be going well.

Re: Slow Site and Server Loads
Well, for reference, I tried to build the search (scan all posts on the entire site and index them and correlate them to each post etc) on our old host. That took 28 hours. I did it on this site, it took 65 minutes - with a lot more posts and topics on the site. And I did that between 10 and 11 GMT evening, which used to be a quite slow time on our old host.Beithir Seun wrote:although I'm yet to try anything drastically testing of the server itself...

One.com (our old host):
1000 MB server space
"Unlimited" traffic ('Unlimited' in the way that they do not specify anything but reserve the right to kill your site if they feel like it's using too much traffic - like they did to Asur.org, thrice)
Our new host:
5000 MB server space
250 GB traffic/month (on One.com, we peaked at 38.7 GB in one month)

Re: Slow Site and Server Loads
One.com wrote:All servers are of the best Hewlett-Packard quality with redundant power supplies, mirrored SCSI disks with daily external tape-backup.
The systems are placed in a private server room at Interxion in Denmark. The server room has redundant power circuits, battery backup, diesel generators and a Vesda (Very Early Smoke Detection Alarm) smoke alarm system.
Our backbone is fibre-based with redundant infrastructure. The total bandwidth is at present 2 x 2 Gigabit multi-homed attached and connected to 3 international carriers, Global Crossing, Deutsche Telecom and Level3, in addition to Danish Internet eXchange.
Servers, server rooms and the bandwidth are monitored around the clock, 365 days a year.
