# of Glade Guard per Unit and # of Units

Post by thesustainablecenter »

So I'm wondering about how many glade guard should be in a unit and how many should be taken in a typical army. I know the flaming banner unit should be a bit bigger to ensure that they produce a flaming wound. But I'm struggling with nailing down a number of how many glade guard in a unit. Also, how many units of glade guard should be taken. I'm thinking 3-4. I know you need some dryads in support to protect them and also need to fill core. But again I'm not sure what number of models and number of units I should take.

It's going to be different for everyone... I personally take 3 units of ten one with flaming banner.. and then a unit of ten scouts and sometimes i throw in 5 glade riders.

I've seen other take a unit of 20 with flame banner and then 2-3 units of ten GG.

But 3 units of ten works alright for me I can split my shots or all focus if i want to. it's also better imo to not waste too many shots on one target when i only needed ten shots.

I was thinking 12 for the flaming banner since long range 4's to hit so 6 hits, and with 6 hits 1 should come up a 6 to wound which puts flame on the unit I want to punish in the shooting phase. But 10 sounds like a good baseline that I can build upon.

Actually a lot of people do 12 flamming banner and they usually bunker a character in there.

At 2000pts, I run a unit of 16 with Flaming Banner and musician, and then two more units of 10 with musicians.

Ya I'm def taking the noble bsb with the HoD arrows and if I need a flaming volley put him in that unit. Otherwise I figure he can float from unit to unit avoiding whatever is the scariest thing on the board.

Personally i use 16 for flaming and a 13(which i always use a character to make 14) and 14. This is mainly due to the fact i got given and odd number of men for boxes and i also like the little bit of extra punch. But 12/14 for flaming and groups of 10 is probably best.

I generally have 1 unit of about 18 w/ flaming banner and then 4 x 10 with just musos. That generally gives me enough shooting to do what I want to do with it.

Some people look at me funny...

...but I digress. In a 2500 pt game I use two units of 20. Both have standards and musicians and one has the BoEF. Why? I like how a unit of 20 hits HARD. Particularly at close range. Also, a large unit can reform with ranks if some pesky light cav unit comes sniffing around. 20 are just so much harder to run off than 10 or 12.

(The real reason is so that I have fewer units to move in tournaments! I've gotten lazy of late. )
So it's no longer the BRB, now it's the DERB. (Digital Edition Rule Book) I am all in for 9th Age.

40 Glade Guard is the minimum for me. I think they are best taken in units of 10, but I've also run them in units of 20 (heck, I've even run one big unit of 40!).

Why 40? Because that's how many it takes to take down most Monsters at close range in a single turn. Any less than that and your odds go way up. Too much more than that and it becomes hard to concentrate fire on a single target.

Also, the Hail of Doom Arrow does not count as Flaming Attacks in the unit with the Banner of Eternal Flame (see Flaming Attacks section in the Rulebook).

You just pop him in another unit. Leave your lvl 4 in the bigger bunker.

You dont want both in the same unit anyway, becomes too tasty a target

Yeah.

I generally bump that flaming unit to 16-18 just because it -really- sucks when you dont get the wound through with the flaming unit on the chimera/trolls/abom/terrorghiest

I myself run (or rather, plan to run since I'm still painting up an army) units of 16, largely out of convenience since that's how many you get in a box. I imagine it'd also be a nice compromise between the mobility of a small 10-elf unit and the firepower of a large 20-elf unit.

As for how many units, I'm thinking of four, though that's because then I can theme each one around a different season.

I go with 1x 15 with the flaming banner (then I add a character, either a shooty BSB or a weaver, and run them in two ranks of 8 so all can shoot) and 2x 10 just with musician.
35 I find to be the right number for me, but I think you are perfectly safe taking a few more before the list starts to have terrible match ups.

But I'd never take less than 20. Unless it was a themed list or something. They are just too handy and worth their points.

I like to field one unit of 20 with full command and the flaming banner (this will be my bunker as well) and three units of 10 with musicians. Four units of 10 would be perfect for me, but ETC comps restrict Glade Guards max 50 so that'll have to do.
