[8TH] Wood Elves vs Dwarfs

Post by LiveWaaaaagh »

Hello all,

Newcomer to Asrai and figured we should introduce ourselves with some battle reports! LiveWaaaaagh.com does live Warhammer content, whether it be 8th Edition, AOS, Blood Bowl, or soon Total War: Warhammer. We do it live on Twitch and then upload videos to YouTube.

W'ere just getting started again with 8th Edition after some AOS time because we realized we missed it.

Today, we did a small game of 850 pts to get back in the swing of things. It's important to note that the wood elf army was technically not legal as we don't have enough core right now (More Dryads in the mail) and our theme is that of a Forest spirit Army.

Lists:
Dwarfs
Character:
Runesmith 1x Rune of Spellbreaking & sheild

Core
15x Thunderers with Shields& FC

Special
15x Ironbreakers w/ FC

Rare
10x Irondrakes w/ FC & Trollhammer Torpedo

Wood Elves
Character
Treeman Ancient - lvl 2 lore of life. Rolled for Regrowth & Awakening of the wood.

Core:
16x Dryads w/ Nymph

Special:
3x Treekin w/elder

Rare:
1x Treeman

Standard Battle lines game.
Deployment as follows:
[Thunderers][Ironbreakers][Irondrakes]

[Treekin] [ Treeman] [ Dryads]
[Treeman Ancient]

Dwarfs win the roll and take turn 1

Turn 1
Dwarfs
Nothing happens. Literally. Out of range to shoot, didn't move.

Wood Elves
All units march up.
Magic uneventful as ancient tried casting awakenings but got dispelled. No need to cast regrowth.

Turn 2
Dwarfs
No charges.
Irondrakes shoot at Treeman and cause 2 wounds. (1 but doubled due to flaming attacks vs flammable).
Thunderers shoot at treeman and do nothing.

Wood Elves
Too far to charge, so they march up again even though wood elves knew they would have to take 1 volley in the face.
Magic
Awakenings get dispelled
Regrowth gets scrolled with rune of spellbreaking.

Turn 3
Dwarfs
No charges.
At short range, the irondrakes hit the treeman, and trollhammer torpedo hits for 3 wounds x2 for flammable, killing the treeman.
Thunderers shoot at treekin and produce 2 wounds.

Wood Elves
Dryads charge Irondrakes
Treekin charge Thunderers
Ancient moves to charge next round.

Stand and shoot produces 4 wounds on dryads. No panic.
Stand and shoot produced 1 wound on treekin, eliminating 1 model.

Combat!
Dryads vs Irondrakes
Dryads produce 2 wounds
Irondrakes produce 1 in return.
Dryads win combat by 1, but Irondrakes stay.

Treekin vs Thunderers
Treekin produce 0 wounds.
Thunderers produce 0 as well.
Treekin lose combat by 2 but stick.

Turn 4
Dwarfs
Ironbreakers choose not to charge waiting for ancient.

Combat!
Dryads vs Irondrakes
Dryads produce 3 wounds
Irondrakes produce 2 in return.
Nobody flees.

Treekin vs Thunderers
Thunderers produce 2 wounds
Treekin produce 1
Treekin lose combat and roll box cars and run!

Treekin roll a 4, thunderers a 7, and they catch them. Treekin are destroyed.

By now, the Thunderers are standing within 3 inches of ancient.

Wood Elves
Ancient charges thunderers.
Magic
Ancient tries to cast regrowth on dryads with 5 dice and gets four 1s and a 2 :D. Needed 12 to cast.

No standing and shooting due to being less than movement away.

Combat!
Dryads vs Irondrakes
Dryads produce 3 wounds
Irondrakes produce 2 wounds.
Nobody runs.

Treeman Ancient vs Thunderers
Ancient produces 1 wound.
Thunderers produce 0 wounds.
Nobody runs.

Turn 5
Dwarfs
Ironbreakers charge dryads.

Combat!
Dryads vs Irondrakes & Ironbreakers results in Dryads fleeing.
Irondrakes pursue and catch them.
Ironbreakers reform to face Ancient.

Thunderers vs Ancient
Thunderers get 2 wounds, vs 0 from Ancient.

At this point Wood Elves concede and it's a DWARF VICTORY!

--

It was a small game, but a fun one. Wood Elves had some bad luck rolling and not very good magic phases.
Irondrakes ate the freeman alive, which hurt.

I'm sure we made mistakes but we're getting back in the swing of things. Look for 1st battle on Twitch next weekend!

Thanks for reading!

Bit late for a reply, but welcome!

Since 8th edition, I've found dwarves the hardest match-up for woodies. Tough, armoured, and can gun us down. I tend to use the moonstone and shadow magic to get up close and personal quickly or to get my squishiest units out of danger, but it's never easy and I've even been tabled a couple of times. You did well!
