Wildwood Rangers banner

Post by MortenLarsen »

Am I the only one who things it's a bit odd that the Rangers only get to take a banner worth up to 25 points? Seems strange to set the cap that low for a special unit. Core units able to take banners are sometimes restricted this way, but I cannot remember a special unit have the same cap.

Perhaps this suggests that WE will get a couple of cheap banners..?

There is apparently a banner that gives the bearing unit vanguard, that would be great for the WWRs, but I imagine it will be too many points. I would guess that the only banner you would want to put on WWRs would be the banner of eternal flame, they are pretty much designed to be monster hunters and that would really give them a boost vs regenerating stuff.

75 pts. Wildriders are at most 50 points for allowance.

Wowsas, does it do more than just convey vanguard that's a terrible item considering its BSB only.

Don't WRs get vangard anyway since they are fast cav?

Re-roll charge. And other than the Idol of Gork I don't know of another item that allows that. So apart from being very pricey that is a powerful ability. Especially for Wild Riders

But if a unit uses its Vanguard ability, it cannot charge in the first turn. Rigth?

Then I really cannot see how 150 slaves plus a BSB would be worth it...

Gleaming Pennant could be good on WWR if you have a mounted BSB.

Rampager's Standard lets you re-roll charge dice. The WE version might be viable on a cav bus, say with stag(s).

For units with a 25 point allowance, I tend to use Gleaming Pennant, Standard of Discipline or Banner of Swiftness. They have no downside, unlike Banner of the Eternal Flame, and they all help a unit like WWR who are somewhat "atypical" by Wood Elf standards. Gleaming Pennant helps them since they want to be fighting Fear Causers and may be far from the BSB or army General. Banner of Discipline for the same reasons... They'll be called upon to make Fear Tests, probably Panic also since they're easier to shoot than many other units in a WE list, and so having higher Leadership really benefits them. Banner of Swiftness also helps them keep pace with the rest of the force, since they're relatively slow and static by the standards of a Wood Elf unit.

They are Immune to Psychology so no Fear test but still having LD10 is worth the points. I will proberly swing them with the Banner of Swiftness.

I think the only unit which can take a magic banner now in the new Lizardmen book is the Temple Guard (which upsets me greatly as I would like to put a banner on my Cold One Cav).

I'll probably equip mine with a banner of swiftness because it'll make them fast enough to keep up with not only our own army but also the enemies monstrous infantry. It remains to be seen if they're actually good at hunting those down though. I'm really worried about squishyness..
