with the influx of new people posting on this sight, and with the same questions being asked is there or or could we get a single button press that will make all unread threads/forums count as read

There is such a function. At the top right on the index page there's a link saying something like "Mark all forums as read".
I'm not sure if you can do it for each forum, but I think you can.
