I have been looking for the same thing, and from my searches most people have been recommending the fey enchantress from the brettonia army.

If you can model a horn reasonably well, get the old school Elven horse and then can look like reasonably good Unicorns imo. My work is amazing, but I think it sufficiently good. Image

Hi there,

You could try the DE "Sulphet" model, there was a good conversion using that and the Fay Enchantress in the GW Elven Collectors Book.

Making a unicorn is pretty easy.

Take a horse. I used our own steeds as I think they are perfect for it, but use any you like.
Now drill a hole in the head where you want the horn.
Glue a metal rod in there. I used 1mm thick rods from the hobby store, because I needed more than one and because I had leftovers from putting my CoA tiny flyers on them (Dystopian wars), but if you only need one, you can just as well use a paperclip.
When it is dry, take a small piece of greenstuff and roll it out on your desk until it is about 0.5 mm thick.
Now carefully wrap it around the metal rod, starting at the head and use a modelling tool to put it in place.
Use your sharpest modelling tool to texture it the way you want and make sure it has a point on the end.

I also filed off the saddles. I don't think it is appropriate for a unicorn or any elven steed for that matter. Of course the leather straps on the head and legs are still there, so if you don't think they are appropriate you should use another head.

I hope this was clear. I added some pictures of the finished glade riders and lvl4 though the horns aren't really very visible.
I still have a bsb who needs to be done, so I can take some pictures of the process when I give him his horn, though honestly I don't know when I will get around to doing that.

The High Elf Tyrion model makes a wonderful Unicorn for the inspired kitbasher/converter. His horse is large, regally decorated, and posed well for a 50mm square base. Simply add a horn and an appropriate rider.

I used the Storm of Magic unicorn and picked up a 4th ed mtd Mage from eBay (quite readily available). Easy peasy!

That is lame. The SoM models were all neat. I hate the internet for crapping on that game so much. It's fun and exciting.

Well look on eBay. It's just the 5th ed Fay Enchantress model and loads better than the 6th ed Fay model. Or ask around your gaming club.

Or I guess convert from a stag? If you follow the link in my plog below nearish to the end is my Spellweaver on a unicorn.

cheers!

Hey Guys,

Thought you all might want to see a conversion I started a few years ago and never got around to finishing. It is an old school GW unicorn with a Reaper Fay on its back.I thought it paid homage to the original GW Ariel model, while still incorporating a more modern action pose. I wrapped a few vines on there and was going to base it, but I put it on hold because it never felt finished an I could not think of what it was missing. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hey all,
I was reading this post doesn't Morathi's horse have horns? Granted it also has wings but my brother used her for his dark elf army and i think that horse would fit the bill to the t all you gotta do is file off a few things, and the wings could be moved to some other modeling project.

Yea, the best is the one you convert to a unicorn that or buy off brand. The current two unicorns in the GW line is either OOP or not wood elfy.

Also the OOP unicorn is the same between the Bret/High Elf/Wood Elf unicorn, so buying a Elf Unicorn will net you the same unicorn as the Bret Morgana Unicorn

A little sand paper, filing and green stuff and the Pegasus kit from GW makes a great Unicorn.

The unicorn is on a 50mm base now, correct?

Depends what you use as the basis of the unicorn. The fey enchantress comes on a 40mm base, as does the Pegasus. Archaeon (as the one above is based on) is on a 50mm base.

Monstrous cavalry is generally on a 50x75mm base though so there is clearly no real standardization in place. Choose whatever will fit in whichever unit you want to put them in.

The Fey in 6th came on a 50mm. That would supersede a 40mm. However GW sold the Fey's original unicorn during Storm of Magic with a cavalry base.

However the initial 7th ed Base PDF listed out unicorn at 50mm.

I honestly wouldn't care what my opponent did. Unit type specifies LoS more than base size and your lvl 4 won't be in CC all that much.

the classic remark from GW is that "use the base that is delivered with the model"
But I think that goes out the window in the case of kitbashing or converting your own model. I personally think it is cheese to put a model on a smaller base, because you get obvious gameplay advantages. I put all my monsters on 50mm bases, because that is the standard on newer releases.

on that remark I'm still questionable about the new treeman standard... If you can choose the shortside as the front or not.

GW have used the base both ways on their "official" models, so I don't think there should be an issue...
