While I agree that there is no absolute Best or absolute Worst, there are Better and Worse armies. I don't agree that the latest armies are the best. An older list, like Thorek-based Dwarfs is VERY tough to beat with any of the armies I use, and the Lothern Sea Guard army has massacred me every time...

I don't know what happenend to the first post. I disagree with you Minsc. Best player wins with all things being equal, but with generally equal players, as in GT final rounds, the army becomes much more important. Some armies require more work to win with and against a roughly equal general, you ar...

If you want speed, leadership, and effectiveness, then Druchii is the answer, but you already have a hard-to-play fragile elf army. Dwarfs, with the Old Grumblers rule, have high and effective leadership, but no movement worth mentioning. Lizardmen, with the Cold-Blooded rule, also can have good lea...

In their own way Brettonians, Tomb Kings, Lizardmen, Dwarfs, and Chaos are powerful, tough, and effective. Empire can be configured that way too. All armies can be configured as Powerful and Effective. By tough, I assume that you mean forgiving of mistakes like Space Marines in 40K, as opposite to f...

What's the criteria for ranking?

Effectiveness, balance, interest, cheese, variety, fluff, most different to Asrai?

I've never seen a WE army that wasn't either MSU or MSE.

16 seems too big for the GG. You will have a hard time getting them all against one target at shorter range. Why not adjust to 2 x 10?

Hope your opponent doesn't have Thorek. Almost al the Dawi armies I have seen recently have been using Thorek, and quite effectively too. not only can he kill you, he can give Dawi surprising mobility too, with the extra move. Since I'm building an all-tree army, I look forward to reading the replies.

Get 2000 points of DE and 1000 points of SM. That should allow small scale hedonism, large scale cruelty and you can combine the two for a CoS list if you choose your units carefully.

Well, you guys have convinced me. I bought a box of Dryads and a Branchwraith today. And so it goes.... It there a Tactica somewhere that discusses the optimum size of Asrai units? A battalion box would give me 24 archers and 8 cavalry, as well as the Dryads. Alter noble gw, la, HotH, HoDA 156 Spell...

I don't like the Skaven - Tyrannid map.

The modern bugs can be a VERY shooty army. A Carni with two twin linked guns can put out 1 shots a turn (I think)

Our characters do get Asrai Archery and Forest Walkers. Both of those can be worth quite a bit, especially when combined with our units and Magic Items. Our base weapon is a Longbow too. The main negative is that we have to pay for abilities that are situational. Fighting in Athel Loren, our special...

Well I know mine won't remain unopened. I need the Dyads to expand further and can paint up the archers as Glade Guard/Scouts/Waywatchers, and the cavalry as Glade Riders/Wild Riders and maybe convert a couple of figures to nobles.

I take no offense whatsoever. I've been colourblind my whole life and have made adjustments. I understand colour theory and I read the labels on the paint pots and know what I'll get when I mix colours. I also use lots of black, white and grey. That's one of the reasons I'm thinking of Ghostwood tre...

My buy plan is:
12 Dryads
Branchwraith
12 Dryads
Ent/Treeman
4 Treekin

That lot should give me my 1000 point core. If I decide to include the option of Elfs in my army, I'll go for a Battalion box next for more Dryads, GG, Scouts, and Waywatchers, and GR/WR.

Thanks for the spite ideas. I often use only 2 or 3 DD at 2000 points, so 3 at 1000 points seems plenty. In the end, I'll tune the spites based on my experiences.

how about ideas for 1000 points of Elfs to bring this up to 2000 points?

Branchwraith, level 1, Netlings, Murder :- 165 points 3 x 8 Dryads @ 96 :- 288 points 1 x 4 Treekin :- 260 points Treeman :- 285 points TOTAL :- 998 points Any final comments before I plo...

Most armies, (except Orks), can be good. I like the Daemonhunter and Witchhunter fluff and a Sister based Witchhunter army can be both effective and fun and can then be morphed to Daemonhunter, Inquisitor Warband, Imperial Guard, or even, God forbid, Space Marines. It all depends on the allies you t...
